Tamil Nadu's Directorate of Medical Education & Research has released the schedule for the Stray Vacancy Round of BDS counselling for the 2026-27 academic session. This is the final opportunity for candidates who did not secure a seat in earlier rounds to get admission to BDS programmes in Tamil Nadu government dental colleges and government-quota seats in self-financing dental colleges. The round is open to candidates ranked GR 001 to GR 3625 (NEET marks 599 to 177). Registration and choice filling begin on 18 October 2026 at 12:01 PM and close on 21 October 2026 at 5:00 PM. Allotment results will be declared on 22 October 2026, and candidates must download their allotment order and report to their assigned college by 26 October 2026 at 5:00 PM. This is a critical round—missing the reporting deadline will result in loss of the seat and a one-year ban from future TN medical counselling.

BDS Stray Vacancy counselling in Tamil Nadu runs 18–21 October 2026 (choice filling), with allotment on 22 October and mandatory reporting by 26 October 5 PM—missing the deadline forfeits your seat and bars you from counselling for one year.

What is the Stray Vacancy Round?

The Stray Vacancy Round is the final counselling round for BDS admission in Tamil Nadu. It fills any remaining seats in government dental colleges and government-quota seats in self-financing dental colleges that were not filled in earlier counselling rounds. This round is open only to candidates who have not yet secured any MBBS or BDS seat anywhere.

This is your last chance to get a BDS seat for the 2026-27 session. If you did not participate in earlier rounds or were not allotted a seat, this is the opportunity to apply. However, the timeline is tight—you have only 4 days to register, fill your choices, and lock them before the portal closes.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

You are eligible for the Stray Vacancy Round if you meet ALL of the following conditions:

You must NOT be holding any MBBS or BDS seat from any previous round or any other state. If you have already joined an MBBS or BDS course anywhere, you cannot participate in this round. Similarly, if you were allotted a seat in Round 3 but did not join it, you are permanently barred from this round and cannot apply.

  • You have not joined any MBBS or BDS seat in any previous round
  • You have not been allotted a seat in Round 3 (or if you were, you did not join it)
  • Your NEET rank falls within GR 001 to GR 3625 (NEET marks 599 to 177)
  • You are a NEET UG 2026 candidate

Important Dates and Timeline

The entire Stray Vacancy process happens in just 9 days. Below is the exact schedule you must follow. Missing any deadline will result in automatic closure of your application or loss of your seat.

Note: Downloading your allotment order is considered as joining the college. Once you download it, you are legally committed to joining that college and must report in person by the deadline. Failure to report will result in your admission being cancelled and a discontinuation fee being charged.

You will need to provide proof of this (such as your school leaving certificate or 10th/12th mark sheet showing your school name and that it is a government school) at the time of reporting to the college. How to Register and Fill Your Choices

The portal will open on 18 October 2026 at 12:01 PM and close on 21 October 2026 at 5:00 PM. You must complete all steps—registration, choice filling, and locking—within this window.

This is a hard deadline. If you do not report by this date and time, your admission will be cancelled without any further notice, and you will lose your seat permanently.

The exact list of certificates required (such as 10th mark sheet, 12th mark sheet, NEET scorecard, caste certificate if applicable, domicile certificate, etc.) should be available on the college's website or in the allotment order. Important: If you are allotted a seat but fail to join or discontinue the course after joining, you will be charged a discontinuation fee as per the rules. This fee is separate from tuition fees and is a penalty for not completing the course.

  • Other candidates: Fee structure to be confirmed by your college
  • Discontinuation fee applies if you fail to join or drop out after joining

Critical Traps and Things That Will Get Your Application Rejected

Several mistakes can result in your application being rejected or your seat being cancelled. Read these carefully and avoid them.

Trap 1: Holding another MBBS or BDS seat. If you are already holding an MBBS or BDS seat from any previous round or any other state, you are NOT eligible for this round. Applying anyway will result in rejection. Trap 2: Not joining Round 3. If you were allotted a seat in Round 3 but did not join it, you are permanently barred from this round. You cannot apply. Trap 3: Rank out of range. If your NEET rank is outside GR 001 to GR 3625, you are not eligible. The portal will reject your application. Trap 4: Not locking your choices. If you do not lock your choices by 5:00 PM on 21 October 2026, they will be auto-locked. Make sure you have finalized your preferences before this time. Trap 5: Downloading allotment order but not reporting. Downloading your allotment order commits you to joining. If you then fail to report by 26 October 2026 at 5:00 PM, your admission will be cancelled, you will pay a discontinuation fee, and you will be barred from TN counselling for one year. Trap 6: Missing the reporting deadline. The deadline is 26 October 2026 at 5:00 PM. If you report even one minute late, your admission will be cancelled without notice. Trap 7: Not bringing original certificates. You must bring original certificates for verification. Photocopies alone are not acceptable. Trap 8: Sharing your login credentials. Never share your login ID, password, or OTP with anyone. This is a security risk and may result in unauthorized access to your account.

  • ⚠️ Fail to lock choices by 5 PM on 21 Oct? They auto-lock—finalize early
  • ⚠️ Download allotment order but don't report? Admission cancelled + 1-year ban
  • ⚠️ Miss 26 Oct 5 PM reporting deadline? Admission cancelled without notice
  • ⚠️ Bring only photocopies, not originals? Certificate verification will fail
  • ⚠️ Share your login ID/password/OTP? Security breach—never do this

What Happens If You Don't Get Allotted a Seat?

If your rank and marks fall within the eligible range but you are not allotted a seat, it means all available BDS seats have been filled by candidates with higher ranks or better choice preferences. In this case, you will not be able to pursue BDS in Tamil Nadu for the 2026-27 session through this counselling.

You may consider applying to BDS programmes in other states, private dental colleges outside Tamil Nadu, or other health professions. You can also prepare for NEET UG 2027 if you wish to try again next year. Contact the Selection Committee at www.tnmedicalselection.net for any clarifications.
