Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute (IGMC&RI), Puducherry — a government medical college — has sent its Information Bulletin for NEET-based UG (MBBS) admissions for the academic year 2026-27 to the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services and to CENTAC (the body that conducts Puducherry's medical counselling). The bulletin lays out how many MBBS seats the college has, how those seats are split between different quotas, and exactly what fees a student in each quota must pay — including a separate, much higher fee track for NRI candidates. It also spells out a financial penalty for students who leave the course after a certain point. This is not a new announcement about extra seats or a schedule change; it is the official fee and seat information that CENTAC will use, and that every candidate applying to IGMC&RI should check before choosing this college in counselling.

IGMC&RI, Puducherry has 180 MBBS seats for 2026-27 (131 Government Quota including EWS, 22 NRI, 27 All India Quota), with tuition free for Puducherry UT/AIQ candidates but a mandatory annual academic fee of Rs. 1,43,700 and a Rs. 4,00,000 penalty for discontinuing after the counselling deadline.

What This Bulletin Is and Why It Matters

This is an official college-level document — the Information Bulletin that IGMC&RI, Puducherry submits every year to the health directorate and to CENTAC before NEET counselling begins. It tells candidates how many MBBS seats exist at this college, how those seats are divided, and the fees payable in each category. Since the college's affiliation for 2026-27 is noted as 'subject to grant of affiliation by Pondicherry University', candidates should keep an eye on official confirmation of affiliation closer to admission, though this is a routine annual formality for an already-functioning college.

If you are considering IGMC&RI as an option during Puducherry counselling or All India Quota counselling, this bulletin is the document to refer to for seat numbers and cost — not word-of-mouth estimates.

MBBS Seat Matrix at IGMC&RI — 180 Seats

IGMC&RI has a total of 180 MBBS seats for 2026-27, split across three quotas. Candidates should apply through the correct counselling channel for their quota — Government Quota and NRI seats are filled through CENTAC's Puducherry-specific process, while the All India Quota (AIQ) seats are filled through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at the national level.

Hostel Fees

Hostel fees are separate from the academic fees above and are payable only if a student takes hostel accommodation. Room charges depend on whether the student gets single or shared (double) occupancy, and whether the room has an attached bathroom.

  • Single occupancy (attached bath, subject to availability): Rs. 30,000 per year
  • Single occupancy in a double room (bath not attached): Rs. 25,000 per head, per year
  • Each occupant in a double room: Rs. 12,500 per head, per year
  • Utility charges: Rs. 10,000 per head, per year
  • Hostel establishment charges: Rs. 3,000 per head, per year

Fee Structure for NRI Candidates — A Much Higher Track

The 22 NRI seats follow an entirely different, dollar-denominated fee structure, quoted here in US dollar equivalents (payable without bank deduction, converted to INR at the time of payment). This is significantly higher than the domestic fee and families should budget accordingly.

Except for the caution deposit, NRI fees once paid are not refundable. University fees, examination fees and other charges levied by Pondicherry University are payable separately, in addition to these amounts.

⚠️ The Discontinuation Penalty — Read This Before You Join

This is the single most important trap in the bulletin, and every candidate joining IGMC&RI must understand it before signing the joint declaration.

If a candidate discontinues the MBBS course on or before the last date of counselling for that admission year, the only consequence is forfeiting the Rs. 20,000 caution deposit — a relatively small loss.

But if a candidate leaves the course after the last date announced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) or any other competent authority, or during any later academic year of the course, the candidate must pay a penalty of Rs. 4,00,000. This is a steep, fixed amount and is separate from any fees already paid.

To enforce this, the college requires the candidate and parent/guardian to sign a separate agreement bond, along with two sureties, at the time of admission. This bond is available with the institute and must be executed before or at admission — candidates should read it carefully rather than sign it casually.

Other Fees Payable to Pondicherry University

Apart from the college fees above, students must separately pay Registration fee, Matriculation fee, Recognition fee, University Development fee, Sports fee, Examination fee, and any other fee that Pondicherry University may levy — at the rates and within the timelines the university prescribes. The bulletin notes that the entire fee structure, including these university fees, is subject to revision.

Joint Declaration Requirement

At the time of admission, every candidate and their parent/guardian must jointly sign a declaration in the format provided by the institute. This is in addition to the discontinuation agreement bond described above. Candidates should ask the college or CENTAC for this format in advance so there is no last-minute confusion during document verification.

Frequently asked questions

How many total MBBS seats does IGMC&RI, Puducherry have for 2026-27?

180 seats in total: 131 under Government Quota (including 10% EWS reservation), 22 under NRI quota, and 27 under All India Quota.

Is tuition fee charged at IGMC&RI?

No. Tuition fee is Nil for Puducherry UT and All India Quota candidates. However, other academic fees (admission, lab, library, special, cultural, welfare, development, sports fees) add up to a yearly total of Rs. 1,43,700 payable to CENTAC.

What happens if I want to leave the course after joining?

If you discontinue on or before the last date of counselling for that year, you only forfeit the Rs. 20,000 caution deposit. If you leave after the last date fixed by NMC or any competent authority, or in any later year of the course, you must pay a penalty of Rs. 4,00,000 as per the signed agreement bond.

Do NRI candidates pay the same fees as domestic candidates?

No. NRI candidates pay a separate, dollar-denominated fee structure — US$1,10,000 as a one-time admission and other fee, plus a US$15,000 refundable caution deposit, along with higher hostel charges.

Are hostel fees included in the Rs. 1,43,700 academic fee?

No. Hostel fees are entirely separate and depend on room type — ranging from Rs. 12,500 per head (shared double room) to Rs. 30,000 (single occupancy with attached bath) per year, plus utility charges, establishment charges, caution deposit and mess deposit.

Are the caution deposits refundable?

Yes. The college caution deposit (Rs. 20,000 for domestic students, US$15,000 for NRI students) and the hostel caution deposit (Rs. 10,000) and mess deposit (Rs. 20,000) are refundable, but only after the candidate is relieved from the institute upon satisfactory completion of the course, and on production of the original payment challan.

Is the college's affiliation confirmed for 2026-27?

The bulletin states the course is offered 'subject to grant of affiliation by Pondicherry University' — meaning affiliation renewal is a routine annual process, but candidates should confirm final affiliation status through official channels before finalising their choice.

Do I need to pay any additional fees to the university besides the college fees?

Yes. Registration fee, Matriculation fee, Recognition fee, University Development fee, Sports fee, Examination fee, and any other fee prescribed by Pondicherry University must be paid separately, at rates the university decides.

If IGMC&RI, Puducherry is on your counselling list, save this fee structure and seat matrix for reference, and read the discontinuation penalty clause carefully with your parents before signing any admission bond. Confirm your specific quota (Government/UT, NRI, or AIQ) and apply through the correct counselling authority — CENTAC for Government Quota and NRI seats, MCC for All India Quota seats.
