The Special Stray Vacancy Round is the final phase of NEET UG counselling conducted by MCC. It is held after all regular counselling rounds are complete, to fill any seats that remain vacant due to candidates declining offers, not reporting to colleges, or other reasons. These are genuine vacancies that would otherwise go unfilled.
In this round, candidates who have already participated in earlier counselling rounds but were not allotted a seat, or who wish to try for a better college or course, can participate. The Special Stray Vacancy Round gives them a second (or final) chance to secure admission to an MBBS or BDS programme.
The Seat Being Added: Details
MCC has added exactly one MBBS seat to the Special Stray Vacancy Round. This seat is in the OBC (Other Backward Classes) category and is located at AIIMS, Madurai, a premier central government medical institute in Tamil Nadu.
AIIMS Madurai is one of the newer AIIMS institutions and offers high-quality medical education under the All India Quota (AIQ) system. This means the seat is available to eligible candidates from across India, not just from Tamil Nadu.
- Institute: AIIMS, Madurai
- Institute Code: 200580
- Course: MBBS
- Category: OBC (Other Backward Classes)
- Number of seats: 1
- Quota: All India Quota (AIQ)
Who is Eligible to Apply for This Seat?
To be eligible for this OBC seat in the Special Stray Vacancy Round, you must meet the following criteria:
First, you must have qualified in NEET UG 2026 — that is, you must have appeared for the NEET UG 2026 examination and obtained a valid score. Second, you must belong to the OBC category as defined by the Government of India. Your OBC certificate must be valid and issued by the competent authority in your state or union territory. Third, you must be eligible to participate in the Special Stray Vacancy Round — this typically means you either did not receive an allotment in earlier rounds, or you are choosing to participate again to seek a better option.
If you have already been allotted a seat in an earlier round and are satisfied with it, you do not need to participate in this round. However, if you wish to try for AIIMS Madurai or any other seat available in this round, you can withdraw from your current allotment and participate.
- Must have qualified in NEET UG 2026
- Must belong to the OBC category with a valid OBC certificate
- Must be eligible to participate in the Special Stray Vacancy Round (either not allotted in earlier rounds, or choosing to participate again)
- Must be an Indian citizen or eligible foreign national as per MCC rules
Important: OBC Category Certificate Requirements
The OBC category seat is reserved exclusively for candidates who hold a valid OBC certificate issued by the competent authority. This is a critical requirement — if your certificate is invalid, expired, or does not meet the specifications set by MCC, your application will be rejected, and you will lose this opportunity.

Your OBC certificate must clearly state that you belong to the OBC category as per the Central List of OBCs maintained by the Government of India. Some states have their own OBC lists; ensure your certificate is recognized at the national level for All India Quota counselling. The certificate must be issued by the District Magistrate, Collector, or other competent authority in your state.
Do not assume your certificate is valid — verify it well before the choice-filling deadline. If there is any doubt, contact MCC or your state counselling authority immediately. A rejected certificate means you cannot claim this seat, even if you fill it as your choice.
- Certificate must be issued by the competent authority (District Magistrate, Collector, or equivalent)
- Must clearly state OBC category status
- Must be recognized under the Central List of OBCs for All India Quota purposes
- Must not be expired or invalid
- Verify validity before filling choices — do not wait until after allotment
How to Register Your Choice for This Seat

The process is straightforward: navigate to the 'Choice Filling' section, search for AIIMS Madurai (Institute Code 200580), select the MBBS course, and if you are eligible for the OBC category, the OBC seat will appear as an option. You can then rank this seat along with any other seats available in this round, according to your preference. After you have filled all your choices, you must submit them before the deadline. Once submitted, you cannot change your choices, so review them carefully before clicking 'Submit'.
The MCC portal will display the exact date and time by which choice filling must be completed. This deadline is strict — submissions made even one minute after the deadline will not be accepted. Mark the deadline clearly and ensure you complete your choice filling well before the cutoff time.

Important Dates and Deadlines
This notice was issued on 4 November 2026. However, the notice does not specify the exact date and time by which choice filling for this seat must be completed. This is a critical gap — you must visit the MCC website immediately to find the choice-filling deadline for the Special Stray Vacancy Round.
Do not delay. The Special Stray Vacancy Round typically operates on a very tight timeline, with choice filling open for only a few days. Once the deadline passes, you will not be able to fill choices for this seat. Check www.mcc.nic.in regularly for updates on the exact schedule, including the start and end dates of choice filling, the date of allotment, and the reporting deadline.
- Notice issued: 4 November 2026
- Choice-filling deadline: Check www.mcc.nic.in for exact date and time
- Allotment date: To be announced on MCC website
- Reporting deadline: To be announced on MCC website
- Action required: Visit MCC website NOW to confirm all dates
What Happens After You Fill Your Choice?
After the choice-filling deadline, MCC will process all the choices submitted by eligible candidates and prepare a merit list based on your NEET UG rank and the category you belong to. The allotment will be made strictly according to merit — candidates with higher NEET ranks will be allotted seats before those with lower ranks, within each category.
Once the allotment is finalized, MCC will publish the allotment result on www.mcc.nic.in. You must log in and check whether you have been allotted the AIIMS Madurai MBBS seat or any other seat. If you are allotted a seat, you will be given a specific date by which you must report to the college with your original documents. Failure to report by this deadline will result in your seat being cancelled, and it will be offered to the next candidate on the merit list.
If you are not allotted a seat in this round, it means either your rank was not high enough to secure the available seats, or there were no seats available in your category after all eligible candidates were accommodated. In that case, you may explore other options such as private medical colleges or counselling in your state.

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
Many candidates lose this opportunity due to preventable errors. The most common mistake is submitting an invalid or expired OBC certificate. If your certificate does not meet MCC's specifications, your application will be rejected outright, regardless of your NEET rank. Verify your certificate's validity NOW, not after the allotment.
Another frequent error is missing the choice-filling deadline. The Special Stray Vacancy Round operates on a very tight schedule, and the choice-filling window may be open for only 2–3 days. If you miss this window, you cannot participate in this round at all. Set a reminder on your phone and check the MCC website daily for the exact deadline.
A third mistake is not logging in to check the allotment result. Some candidates assume they have not been allotted a seat and do not bother to check the portal. Always log in and verify your allotment status. If you have been allotted a seat but fail to report by the deadline because you did not check the result, your seat will be cancelled.
Finally, do not fill choices carelessly. Once you submit your choices, you cannot change them. If you rank a seat as your first choice and are allotted it, you must report to that college — you cannot refuse it and ask for a different seat. Think carefully about your preferences before submitting.
- Invalid or expired OBC certificate — application rejected
- Missing the choice-filling deadline — cannot participate in this round
- Not checking the allotment result — may miss reporting deadline
- Filling choices carelessly — locked into your submitted preferences
- Not reporting by the deadline — seat cancelled and offered to next candidate
