What Happens After Seat Allotment: Freeze vs. Float Options

After the MCC announces seat allotment results on October 24, candidates who receive a seat must make a critical choice: Freeze or Float. Candidates who select Freeze accept their allotted seat and confirm their admission; they will not participate in subsequent counselling rounds and cannot seek upgradation to a better college or course. This option is suitable for candidates satisfied with their allotment.

Candidates who select Float accept their current allotment but remain eligible to participate in round 2 and round 3 counselling in hopes of securing a better seat based on their rank and updated choices. If a candidate floats and receives a better seat in a later round, they can upgrade. However, if they do not receive a better seat, they retain their original allotment. Candidates must report to their allotted college by November 2 regardless of their choice, and the Float/Freeze decision is made during the reporting process.

  • Freeze: Accept allotted seat, no upgradation in later rounds
  • Float: Accept allotted seat but remain eligible for upgradation in rounds 2 and 3
  • Reporting deadline: October 26–November 2
  • Decision made during reporting process
