IIT Madras is following a path IIT Kharagpur has already been walking. IIT Kharagpur built its own hospital on campus and has secured approval to run a postgraduate MD programme, but its undergraduate MBBS course is still pending the infrastructure clearance needed to start.

This shows that even for an established IIT with resources and administrative backing, moving from PhD/MD-level medical education to a full MBBS programme is a multi-year process, not something announced and launched in the same admission cycle.

If you are preparing for NEET UG 2026 or 2027, this development should not factor into your college choice or counselling strategy this year. Your seat options remain the existing government and private medical colleges recognised by the NMC and allotted through central and state counselling.
