MedAdmit News Desk 6 Nov 2026 12 min read

Bihar's PGMAC (Post Graduate Medical Admission Counselling) has released the official opening and closing ranks for Round 1 of NEET-PG 2026 counselling. This comprehensive cutoff list covers all participating medical colleges in Bihar—including IGIMS Patna, PMC Patna, NMC Patna, DMC Laheriasarai, JLN Medical College Bhagalpur, and many others—across MD, MS, DNB Degree, and DNB Diploma specialties. The ranks are broken down by seat type (Open, Female, Reserved), category (UR, EBC, SC, ST, EWS, RCG, and minority quotas), and specialty. If your NEET-PG rank falls between the opening and closing rank for a seat you are eligible for, you have a realistic chance of securing that seat in Round 1. This notice is essential for understanding your position in the merit queue and planning your choice-filling strategy.

Your chances of getting a seat depend on whether your NEET-PG rank falls between the opening and closing rank for your chosen specialty, college, category and seat type.

What Are Opening and Closing Ranks?

The opening rank is the best (lowest) NEET-PG rank that was offered a seat in that specialty at that college in that category during Round 1. The closing rank is the worst (highest) NEET-PG rank that was actually allotted a seat. If your rank is between these two numbers (inclusive), you fall within the merit band for that seat.

For example, if General Medicine at PMC Patna for UR (Unreserved) category shows an opening rank of 998 and closing rank of 2549, then any candidate with a NEET-PG rank from 998 to 2549 in the UR category could potentially get that seat, depending on their choice priority and the exact allotment algorithm.

Important: the opening and closing ranks shown here are for Round 1 only. In subsequent rounds (Round 2, Round 3, etc.), these ranks will shift—usually the closing rank moves higher (worse) as more candidates join and seats fill. Do not assume Round 1 cutoffs will hold in later rounds.

How to Read the Cutoff Table

The table lists every seat offered in Round 1, organized by college, specialty, and seat type. Each row shows: Course Type (DEGREE for MD/MS, DNB DEGREE for DNB Degree, DNB DIPLOMA for DNB Diploma), Institute name, Branch (specialty), Seat Type (Open, Female, or reserved category), and then the ranks.

The rank columns are: NEET OPENING RANK and NEET CLOSING RANK (these are your overall NEET-PG rank, used for all candidates regardless of category), and then UR OPENING RANK and UR CLOSING RANK (these are category-specific ranks—the rank within the UR category only). Similarly, CAT OPENING RANK and CAT CLOSING RANK show the rank within the reserved category (e.g., SC, EBC, EWS, etc.).

For example, a row showing 'General Medicine, UR, OPEN SEAT' with NEET Opening 774 and NEET Closing 774 means only one candidate (rank 774) was allotted that seat. If UR Opening is 3 and UR Closing is 3, it means that candidate was ranked 3rd among all UR candidates.

Understanding Seat Types and Categories

OPEN SEAT: available to all candidates, regardless of category. Allotted by overall NEET-PG rank (NEET Opening/Closing Rank columns).

FEMALE SEAT: reserved for women candidates only. A woman with a lower rank may get a female seat even if her overall rank is higher than the opening rank for an open seat in the same specialty.

RESERVED CATEGORY SEATS: seats reserved for SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), EBC (Extremely Backward Class), EWS (Economically Weaker Section), RCG (Resident of Chhota Nagpur / Santhal Pargana), and minority quotas (Muslim Minority, Sikh Minority). These are allotted using category-specific ranks (CAT Opening/Closing Rank).

DQ SEAT: Domicile Quota seat, reserved for candidates domiciled in Bihar. NRI SEAT: for Non-Resident Indian candidates. These have separate rank lists.

  • OPEN SEAT: all candidates, ranked by overall NEET-PG rank
  • FEMALE SEAT: women only, ranked by overall NEET-PG rank
  • SC/ST/EBC/EWS/RCG: reserved categories, ranked by category-specific rank
  • DQ: domicile quota (Bihar residents only)
  • NRI: Non-Resident Indian candidates
  • Minority quotas: Muslim Minority, Sikh Minority (ranked by category-specific rank)

Key Colleges and Their Round 1 Cutoffs

IGIMS Patna (Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences) is the premier government medical college in Bihar. General Medicine UR Open Seat had an opening rank of 774 and closing rank of 774—extremely competitive. Radiodiagnosis UR Open had opening rank 1531 and closing rank 1531. Most specialties at IGIMS show very low closing ranks, indicating high competition.

PMC Patna (Patna Medical College) is another major government college. General Medicine UR Open Seat had opening rank 998 and closing rank 2549, showing a wider band of candidates. Radiodiagnosis UR Open had opening rank 579 and closing rank 579.

NMC Patna (Nalanda Medical College) shows General Medicine UR Open with opening rank 2141 and closing rank 2141. Radiodiagnosis UR Open had opening rank 1928 and closing rank 1928.

DMC Laheriasarai (Darbhanga Medical College) shows General Medicine UR Open with opening rank 3185 and closing rank 3708. General Surgery UR Open had opening rank 7099 and closing rank 9557.

JLN Medical College Bhagalpur shows General Medicine UR Open with opening rank 4002 and closing rank 4002. General Surgery UR Open had opening rank 11507 and closing rank 11507.

Private and newer colleges like Lord Buddha Koshi Medical College (Saharsa), Madhubani Medical College, and Netaji Subhas Medical College show higher closing ranks, indicating lower competition than premier government colleges.

How to Use This Cutoff to Assess Your Chances

Step 1: Find your NEET-PG rank. This is your overall rank in the NEET-PG 2026 exam, not a category-specific rank.

Step 2: Identify your category (UR, SC, ST, EBC, EWS, RCG, or minority quota) and whether you are eligible for a female seat.

Step 3: Search the table for the college and specialty you are interested in. Look for rows matching your category and seat type.

Step 4: Compare your NEET-PG rank with the NEET Opening and NEET Closing Rank columns (for open and female seats) or the CAT Opening and CAT Closing Rank columns (for reserved category seats). If your rank is between opening and closing (inclusive), you are in the merit band.

Step 5: Remember that being in the merit band does NOT guarantee a seat. Your actual allotment depends on: (a) how many candidates ahead of you in the merit list also chose that seat, (b) your choice priority (which choice number you gave to that seat), and (c) the allotment algorithm. Candidates who ranked that seat higher in their choice list get priority.

Example: If you are UR category with NEET rank 1500, and you see General Medicine at PMC Patna UR Open with opening rank 998 and closing rank 2549, your rank falls in the band. But if 500 candidates ahead of you (ranks 998–1499) also chose that seat as their first choice, you may not get it if you chose it as your second choice.

Important Differences Between Round 1 and Later Rounds

Round 1 cutoffs are based on the first set of choices filled by candidates. In Round 2, candidates who did not get a seat in Round 1 can fill fresh choices, and candidates who got a seat can upgrade or downgrade. This causes the merit list to change.

Typically, in Round 2 and beyond, the closing ranks for popular specialties at premier colleges move higher (worse), because more candidates join the pool and competition increases. Conversely, closing ranks for less popular specialties or colleges may move lower (better).

Do not use Round 1 cutoffs to predict Round 2 or Round 3 cutoffs. Each round has its own merit list and cutoffs. However, Round 1 cutoffs give you a baseline understanding of competition levels.

Category-Specific Rank vs. Overall Rank

For OPEN and FEMALE seats, the NEET Opening and NEET Closing Rank columns show your overall rank (rank among all candidates, regardless of category). This is what matters for allotment to these seats.

For reserved category seats (SC, ST, EBC, EWS, RCG, minority quotas), the CAT Opening and CAT Closing Rank columns show your rank within that category only. For example, if you are SC category and the CAT Opening Rank for a seat is 10 and CAT Closing Rank is 50, it means you are ranked between 10th and 50th among all SC candidates for that seat.

Your category-specific rank is calculated by the counselling authority based on your NEET-PG score and your category certificate. You cannot calculate it yourself; it is provided in your allotment letter or counselling portal.

Colleges and Specialties Covered in Round 1

This cutoff list covers 30+ government and private medical colleges across Bihar, including: A.N.M.M.C. Gaya, BIMHAS Koilwar (Bhojpur), DMC Laheriasarai, GMC Bettiah, GMC Purnea, IGIMS Patna, JLN Medical College Bhagalpur, K.M.C. Katihar, Lord Buddha Koshi Medical College (Saharsa), Madhubani Medical College, MGMMC & LSK Hospital (Kishanganj), N.M.C. Patna, N.M.C. Sasaram, Netaji Subhas Medical College, PMC Patna, RDJM Medical College (Muzaffarpur), S.K.M.C. Muzaffarpur, Shree Narayan Medical Institute (Saharsa), and multiple Sadar Hospitals offering DNB Diploma courses.

Specialties include: General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology (OBS & GYNAE), Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, Radiology/Radiodiagnosis, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Anatomy, Dermatology, E.N.T., Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Community Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (F.M.T.), Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PHY.MED.& REHAB.), and Radiation Oncology.

DNB Diploma courses include: D.C.H. (Diploma in Child Health), D.G.O. (Diploma in Gynaecology & Obstetrics), D.A. (Diploma in Anaesthesiology), D.M.R.D. (Diploma in Medical Radiography & Diagnostic Imaging), and D.O./D.O.M.S. (Diploma in Ophthalmology).

What Happens If Your Rank Is Above (Better Than) the Opening Rank?

If your rank is better (lower) than the opening rank for a seat, you are definitely in the merit band and have a strong chance of getting that seat—but only if you chose it in your choice list. If you did not choose it, you will not be allotted it, even if your rank is excellent.

For example, if you are UR category with NEET rank 500, and General Medicine at IGIMS Patna UR Open has opening rank 774, your rank is better. If you chose that seat, you are very likely to get it (unless the seat was already filled by candidates with even better ranks who chose it first).

What Happens If Your Rank Is Below (Worse Than) the Closing Rank?

If your rank is worse (higher) than the closing rank for a seat, you are outside the merit band and will not be allotted that seat in Round 1, even if you chose it. However, you may get it in a later round if candidates ahead of you upgrade to better seats.

For example, if you are UR category with NEET rank 3000, and General Medicine at PMC Patna UR Open has closing rank 2549, your rank is worse. You will not get that seat in Round 1. But in Round 2, if some candidates with ranks 1000–2549 upgrade to IGIMS or other premier colleges, the closing rank for PMC may move higher, and you might get it then.

Female Seats and Women Candidates

Many specialties have dedicated female seats. These are allotted only to women candidates, using their overall NEET-PG rank (not a separate female rank). A woman with NEET rank 5000 may get a female seat in a specialty where the female seat opening rank is 6000 and closing rank is 7000, even though her overall rank is better than the opening rank.

Female seats are typically less competitive than open seats in the same specialty at the same college, because the candidate pool is smaller. If you are a woman, always check both open and female seat cutoffs for the specialties you are interested in, and include both in your choice list to maximize your chances.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NEET Opening Rank and CAT Opening Rank?

NEET Opening Rank is your overall rank among all NEET-PG candidates, regardless of category. It is used for allotment to OPEN and FEMALE seats. CAT Opening Rank is your rank within a specific reserved category (SC, ST, EBC, EWS, RCG, or minority quota). It is used only for allotment to seats reserved for that category. For example, if you are SC category, your CAT Opening Rank for an SC seat is your rank among all SC candidates, not among all candidates.

If my rank is between the opening and closing rank, am I guaranteed a seat?

No. Being in the merit band means you are eligible for that seat, but allotment also depends on: (1) how many candidates ahead of you chose that seat, (2) your choice priority (which choice number you gave to that seat), and (3) the allotment algorithm. If many candidates ahead of you chose that seat as their first choice, you may not get it even if your rank is in the band. Always include multiple choices in your preference list.

Can I use Round 1 cutoffs to predict Round 2 cutoffs?

Not reliably. Round 2 cutoffs depend on which candidates upgrade, downgrade, or join fresh. Typically, closing ranks for popular specialties move higher (worse) in later rounds as more candidates compete. However, each round has its own merit list. Always wait for the official Round 2 cutoffs before making decisions.

What does 'opening rank 19740 and closing rank 19740' mean?

It means only one candidate was allotted that seat in Round 1, and that candidate had NEET rank 19740. This usually happens for very unpopular specialties or seats at less preferred colleges. It does not mean the seat is easy to get; it means very few candidates chose it.

I am SC category. Should I look at NEET Opening Rank or CAT Opening Rank?

If you are applying for an SC reserved seat, look at the CAT Opening and CAT Closing Rank columns. These show your rank within the SC category. If you are applying for an OPEN or FEMALE seat, look at the NEET Opening and NEET Closing Rank columns, because these seats are allotted by overall rank, not category rank.

What is a female seat, and can only women apply for it?

A female seat is reserved for women candidates only. It is allotted using the woman's overall NEET-PG rank. Men cannot apply for female seats. Women can apply for both open seats and female seats; they should include both in their choice list to maximize chances.

Why do some specialties have very high closing ranks (e.g., 150000+)?

High closing ranks usually indicate unpopular specialties or colleges that few candidates chose. For example, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy typically have higher closing ranks than General Medicine or Surgery. This does not mean these specialties are bad; it reflects candidate preferences. If you are interested in these fields, you may have a better chance of getting a seat.

What does 'DQ OPEN SEAT' mean?

DQ stands for Domicile Quota. These seats are reserved for candidates who are domiciled in Bihar (have lived in Bihar for a specified period, usually 5 years). If you are domiciled in Bihar, you can apply for DQ seats using your overall NEET-PG rank. DQ seats typically have lower competition than open seats.

I did not get a seat in Round 1. Can I participate in Round 2?

Yes. If you did not get a seat in Round 1, you can fill fresh choices for Round 2. You will be placed in a new merit list based on your NEET-PG rank and the choices you fill. Round 2 cutoffs will be different from Round 1, and you may get a seat then. Always participate in all rounds until you get a seat or the counselling ends.

What is the difference between DNB DEGREE and DNB DIPLOMA?

DNB DEGREE (Diplomate of National Board Degree) is a 3-year postgraduate degree course equivalent to MD/MS. DNB DIPLOMA is a 2-year postgraduate diploma course (e.g., D.C.H., D.G.O., D.A.). Both are recognized qualifications. DNB DIPLOMA courses typically have higher closing ranks because they are shorter and attract more candidates.

Can I change my choices after Round 1 if I did not get a seat?

Yes. If you did not get a seat in Round 1, you can fill fresh choices for Round 2. You are not bound by your Round 1 choices. You can choose different colleges, specialties, and seat types in Round 2. However, if you got a seat in Round 1, you can only upgrade or downgrade in Round 2, not change your choices completely.

What is a 'Muslim Minority' or 'Sikh Minority' seat?

These are seats reserved for candidates belonging to Muslim or Sikh religious minorities, respectively. They are allotted using category-specific ranks (CAT Opening/Closing Rank). To apply for these seats, you must have a valid minority certificate issued by the competent authority. These seats are separate from SC/ST/EBC/EWS quotas.

Review the cutoff table carefully and identify all seats where your NEET-PG rank falls between the opening and closing rank for your category and seat type. Make a list of realistic options (seats you are likely to get) and aspirational options (seats with lower closing ranks that you might get if candidates ahead of you upgrade). Fill your choice list strategically, placing your most preferred seats first and gradually moving to less preferred but more achievable seats. Remember: your actual allotment depends on your choices, your rank, and how many candidates ahead of you chose the same seats. Participate actively in all counselling rounds—Round 1 is just the beginning, and many seats are filled in later rounds.
