Tamil Nadu NEET UG 2026 Round 2 Counselling: Dates, Eligibility & Process

Tamil Nadu's Round 2 counselling for MBBS and BDS admission has been announced by the Directorate of Medical Education & Research. This round is for candidates who did not get a seat in Round 1, those who were allotted but did not join, and those seeking to upgrade to a better college. Registration opens on 7 September 2026 and closes on 8 September 2026. The final joining deadline is 18 September 2026. This is your chance to secure a seat if you missed out in Round 1, or to move to a better college if you already have one.

What is Round 2 Counselling and Who Should Apply?

Round 2 is a second chance to secure an MBBS or BDS seat in Tamil Nadu government colleges, ESIC Medical College (K.K. Nagar, Chennai), self-financing medical and dental colleges (including Christian Medical College, Vellore), state private universities, and for Wards of IRT candidates. It is open to candidates who participated in Round 1 but did not get a seat, those who were allotted but chose not to join, and those who want to upgrade to a better college.

This round also includes seats that become available when Round 1 allottees choose to upgrade or withdraw. These are called 'virtual vacancies'—they appear in Round 2 and can be filled by any eligible candidate who ranks higher or prefers them.

Important Dates for Round 2 Counselling

The entire Round 2 process spans from 7 September to 18 September 2026. Below are the key milestones you must not miss.

Who Must Register and Who Does Not Need To

Not every candidate needs to register again for Round 2. The rules depend on what happened to you in Round 1. Read carefully to see if you must register or if you are already in the system.

**You do NOT need to register again if:**

• You registered in Round 1 but did not get any seat allotted. You are already in the system and will be considered automatically.

• You were allotted a seat in Round 1 but did not join the college. You remain registered.

• You joined a seat in Round 1 and marked 'Yes' for upgradation in the college portal during admission. Your seat will appear as a virtual vacancy in Round 2, and you will be considered for upgradation automatically.

• You joined a seat in Round 1 and marked 'Yes' for upgradation, but now you want to keep your current seat instead. You do not need to participate in Round 2; your seat will be automatically retained.

**You MUST register if:**

• You joined a seat in Round 1 and marked 'No' for upgradation in the college portal, but now you want to upgrade to a better college. You must log in during the registration window (7–8 September 2026) to confirm your participation. If you do not, you will not be eligible for upgradation.

• You did not register in Round 1 at all. You can register fresh in Round 2 if you have already applied to Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee and your name appears in the published merit list. You will have to pay the registration fee.

**You do NOT need to participate if:**

• You want to keep your current seat and are happy with your Round 1 allotment. Simply do not register or participate in Round 2.

Rank and NEET Score Ranges for Round 2

Round 2 is open to candidates within specific rank and NEET score ranges. These ranges differ between General Quota (GQ) and Management Quota (MQ). If your rank or score falls outside these ranges, you are not eligible for Round 2.

How to Register for Round 2

Registration is the first step. You must complete it between 7 September 2026 at 10:00 AM and 8 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. If you are registering fresh (because you did not register in Round 1), you will need to pay the registration fee during this window. If you are already registered from Round 1, you do not pay again unless you are logging in to confirm upgradation eligibility.

Go to the official Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee website (www.tnmedicalselection.org), log in with your credentials, and complete the registration process. If you are a fresh registrant, ensure you have already applied to Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee and that your name is in the published merit list before attempting to register.

**Important:** Do not share your login ID, password, or OTP with anyone. These are personal and confidential.

Choice Filling: How to Select Your Colleges

After registration closes, choice filling begins on 9 September 2026 at 2:00 PM and ends on 13 September 2026 at 2:00 PM. During this window, you will select the colleges and courses you wish to be considered for, in order of your preference.

**Key rules for choice filling:**

• You can only fill choices for the quota categories (Government or Management) that you applied for in Round 1. For example, if you applied for both Government and Management quota, you will have choices for both. If you applied only for Government quota, you can only fill Government quota choices.

• You can edit your choices as many times as you want before you lock them.

• Once you lock your choices, they cannot be changed. Choose carefully and lock only when you are certain.

• If you do not lock your choices by 13 September 2026 at 2:00 PM, the system will automatically lock them for you.

• Read the prospectus thoroughly before filling choices. Understand the fees, facilities, and location of each college.

**Important note on choice locking:** Choice locking will be enabled only after 12 September 2026 at 10:00 AM because All India Quota (AIQ) results are expected to be declared on 11 September 2026. This delay allows you to see if you have been allotted an AIQ seat before finalizing your Tamil Nadu state quota choices.

Understanding Virtual Vacancies

A 'virtual vacancy' is a seat that appears available in Round 2 but may or may not actually become available, depending on whether the Round 1 allottee upgrades or withdraws.

Here is how it works: If a candidate was allotted a seat in Round 1 and marked 'Yes' for upgradation (either by registering in Round 2 or by selecting upgradation in the college portal during Round 1 admission), that Round 1 seat is shown as a virtual vacancy in Round 2. All candidates can fill this seat in their choice list. However, the seat will only be allotted in Round 2 if the Round 1 allottee actually upgrades (gets a better seat) or withdraws. If the Round 1 allottee does not upgrade, the virtual vacancy does not become a real vacancy, and no one gets that seat in Round 2.

This means: Do not assume a virtual vacancy is guaranteed. It is a possibility, not a certainty. Fill your choices based on seats you are confident about, and treat virtual vacancies as bonus options.

What Happens After You Get Allotted: Upgradation vs. Retention

If you are allotted a seat in Round 2, you have two scenarios:

**Scenario 1: You are upgraded (allotted a better seat than in Round 1)**

If you had a Round 1 seat and are now allotted a better seat in Round 2, you MUST relinquish your Round 1 seat and join the Round 2 seat. You will have no rights over your Round 1 seat—it will be offered to other candidates in descending order of rank. If you do not join your Round 2 seat, you lose both seats and cannot claim your Round 1 seat back.

**Scenario 2: You are allotted the same seat (retention)**

If you participated in Round 2 but were allotted the same seat you had in Round 1, you are considered 'retained.' You follow the same rules as upgraded candidates regarding discontinuation and future rounds.

**Scenario 3: You are freshly allotted in Round 2 (new seat, not from Round 1)**

If you did not have a Round 1 seat and are allotted a seat in Round 2, you can join it. If you do not report or join, you can participate in further rounds without forfeiture—this is called a 'free exit.' You do not lose any fees or deposits.

Fee Payment and Downloading Your Allotment Order

Once allotment results are published on 15 September 2026, you must download your provisional allotment order between 15 September 2026 and 18 September 2026 at 3:00 PM. To download, you will need to pay the tuition fee (unless you are exempt). The fee structure is available on www.tnmedicalselection.org.

**Who must pay the tuition fee to download the allotment order:**

• All candidates freshly allotted for MBBS seats in any college under any category.

• All candidates freshly allotted for BDS seats in government dental colleges.

• Payment is online only: Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, or RTGS.

**Who is exempt from upfront fee payment:**

• Candidates belonging to SC, SCA, ST, or SCC categories who have been allotted seats in Government Quota or Management Quota, if their parents' or guardian's annual income is less than ₹2.5 lakhs (as per the valid income certificate submitted to Tamil Nadu Medical Selection Committee earlier).

**Special cases:**

• If you are re-allotted in Round 2 and already paid the tuition fee in Round 1, you only pay the difference (if any).

• If you are allotted a BDS seat in a self-financing dental college, you do not pay the fee now. You pay the tuition fee directly to the college at the time of admission, as per Government Order No. 868 dated 18 July 2023.

**Before you pay:** Ensure your bank account has sufficient funds and that your credit/transaction limit is expanded to handle the payment. Payment failures can delay your allotment order download.

Joining the College: What You Must Do

After downloading your provisional allotment order, you must join the allotted college on or before the date and time specified in the order. The last date of joining for Round 2 is 18 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. If you do not report to the Head of the Institution by this deadline, your selection and admission will be cancelled without further notice.

**At the time of joining, bring:**

• Your original certificates (all of them—10th, 12th, NEET admit card, NEET result, caste certificate if applicable, income certificate if applicable, and any other documents specified in the prospectus).

• Scanned copies of your original certificates for verification.

• A self-declaration form (to be filled at the college) stating that you are liable for forfeiture of your seat if any suppression of facts or misinterpretation is found during or after admission.

**Certificate verification:** The college will verify your original certificates in person at the time of joining. Do not send certificates by post or courier.

**If you do not join:** Your admission will be cancelled immediately, and you will not be eligible for any further consideration unless you participate in a subsequent round.

What If You Want to Discontinue or Withdraw?

If you join a seat in Round 2 but later decide to discontinue the course, the rules depend on when you discontinue:

**If you discontinue before the stipulated resignation date (to be announced later):**

You can withdraw without forfeiture of fees or deposits. You will be eligible to participate in subsequent rounds of counselling for 2026–2027.

**If you discontinue after the stipulated resignation date:**

You can still participate in Round 3 of counselling, but you will forfeit all registration fees and security deposits you paid. This is a financial penalty for late withdrawal.

**If you were freshly allotted in Round 2 and do not join:**

You can participate in further rounds without any forfeiture. This is a 'free exit' and applies only to candidates who were newly allotted in Round 2 (not those who upgraded from Round 1).

**If you upgraded from Round 1 to Round 2 and do not join Round 2:**

You lose both your Round 1 and Round 2 seats. You cannot claim your Round 1 seat back, and you cannot participate in further rounds. This is a critical rule—if you upgrade, you must join the Round 2 seat.

Common Mistakes That Get Your Application Rejected

**Mistake 1: Not registering when you should have.**

If you joined a Round 1 seat and said 'No' to upgradation, but now want to upgrade, you MUST log in during the registration window (7–8 September 2026) to confirm participation. If you skip this step, you will not be eligible for upgradation, even if you fill choices later.

**Mistake 2: Missing the joining deadline.**

The last date to join is 18 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. If you download your allotment order on 18 September but do not reach the college by 5:00 PM, your admission is cancelled. Plan your travel in advance.

**Mistake 3: Not bringing original certificates to the college.**

The college will verify your original certificates in person. If you do not bring them, you cannot complete admission. Photocopies or scanned copies alone are not enough for verification.

**Mistake 4: Locking choices without reading the prospectus.**

Once you lock your choices, they cannot be changed. If you lock without understanding the fees, location, or course structure, you may regret it. Read the prospectus thoroughly first.

**Mistake 5: Assuming all virtual vacancies will become real.**

Virtual vacancies are not guaranteed. If the Round 1 allottee does not upgrade, the virtual vacancy disappears. Do not rely solely on virtual vacancies; fill choices based on confirmed available seats.

**Mistake 6: Not paying the tuition fee or paying with insufficient funds.**

If you cannot download your allotment order because you did not pay the fee or the payment failed, you will miss the joining deadline. Ensure your bank account has sufficient funds and expanded transaction limits before attempting payment.

**Mistake 7: Sharing your login credentials.**

Never share your login ID, password, or OTP with anyone—not even family members or counsellors. Your credentials are personal and confidential. Sharing them can lead to unauthorized changes to your choices or account.

**Mistake 8: Not checking the website for updates.**

The Selection Committee will not send direct messages or emails to candidates. All updates, schedules, and notices are posted on www.tnmedicalselection.org. Check the website regularly.

Important General Instructions

• **Vacancy information:** The number of available seats in each college and category will be published on the official website. Check this before filling your choices.

• **Allotment is based on rank and reservation rules:** Seats are allotted strictly according to your rank and the applicable reservation category (General, SC, SCA, ST, SCC, etc.). Merit alone does not guarantee a seat if higher-ranked candidates have already filled it.
