AFMC Pune NEET UG 2026 MBBS Admission: Eligibility, Selection & Medical Standards

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune has released its official information brochure for MBBS admission in 2026. A total of 145 medical cadets (115 boys and 30 girls) will be selected, plus 5 government-sponsored candidates from friendly foreign countries. Unlike civilian medical colleges, AFMC candidates become both doctors and commissioned officers in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), with a compulsory service liability of 7 years for Short Service Commission or till superannuation for Permanent Commission. What is AFMC and who can apply?

Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is India's premier defence medical institute established in 1948. It is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college trains medical graduates who become both doctors and commissioned officers in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).

AFMC is not a civilian medical college. Candidates admitted here undergo a 4½-year MBBS course followed by 12 months of compulsory rotating internship in service hospitals. Upon graduation, all cadets are commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy, or Air Force Medical Corps and must serve for a minimum of 7 years (Short Service Commission) or until retirement (Permanent Commission). This dual role—physician and military officer—means candidates must possess not only medical knowledge but also leadership qualities, physical robustness, and psychological fitness.

The college is fully residential. All cadets live in hostels on campus, participate in military training, and are subject to a strict code of conduct and discipline. This is fundamentally different from civilian medical education.

Who is eligible to apply for AFMC MBBS 2026?

To be eligible for AFMC MBBS admission 2026, a candidate must satisfy all of the following criteria. First, the candidate must be a citizen of India. Foreign nationals of Indian origin may be admitted only after acquiring Indian citizenship or obtaining a certificate of eligibility from the Ministry of Home Affairs—this does not apply to the 5 government-sponsored candidates from friendly foreign countries.

Second, the candidate must be unmarried at the time of admission and throughout the course. Marriage during the MBBS course is strictly not permitted and will result in removal from the college.

Third, the candidate must be medically fit as per the prescribed standards laid down by the Government of India, Ministry of Defence (detailed in Appendix 'A' of the brochure). Medical fitness is assessed by a Medical Board at AFMC and is a critical gate—candidates declared unfit cannot be admitted.

Fourth, age eligibility is strict: the candidate must have attained 17 years of age at the time of admission or must complete that age on or before 31 December of the year of admission, but must not have attained 24 years on that date. In other words, candidates must be born between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2009.

Academic qualifications: what subjects and marks are required?

Candidates must have passed one of the qualifying examinations listed below in the first attempt only. Candidates who secured the required percentage in subsequent attempts or compartment examinations are not eligible. The qualifying examination must include English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology taken simultaneously, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the three science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology) combined, and not less than 50% marks in English and 50% marks in each individual science subject. Candidates must also have passed Mathematics at the 10th standard level.

Acceptable qualifying examinations include: (1) Class 12 Higher Secondary or equivalent (with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English); (2) Higher/Senior Secondary Examination or Indian School Certificate equivalent after 12 years of study; (3) Intermediate/Pre-degree Examination in Science from an Indian University/Board; (4) Pre-professional/Pre-medical Examination; (5) First year of a three-year degree course from a recognized University with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology; (6) B.Sc. Examination from an Indian University with at least two of Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology)/Biotechnology; or (7) Any other examination equivalent in scope and standard to the Intermediate Science Examination of an Indian University/Board.

Important: Candidates who have undertaken study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as additional subjects after passing Class 12 from duly recognized boards may be permitted to appear for the AFMC interview, but their candidature will be considered only if they provide documentary evidence of having passed the qualifying examination with the required subjects and percentage. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination whose 12th result is awaited may apply and appear for the AFMC interview, but they will not be eligible for admission if they do not pass the qualifying examination with the required percentage.

Candidates are not eligible if they have passed in Domestic Science, Domestic Arithmetic, Lower Math, or only Pre-University/Pre-Degree (one-year course) or Pre-Professional in Agriculture/Veterinary/Dental Examination.

How to apply: registration and NEET UG 2026 requirement

All candidates seeking admission to AFMC MBBS must mandatorily qualify the NEET UG 2026 examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). There is no separate entrance examination for AFMC; NEET UG 2026 score is the primary qualification.

After qualifying NEET UG 2026, eligible candidates must register and apply for AFMC, Pune on the DGHS website www.mcc.nic.in during the registration window provided by DGHS (Medical Counselling Committee). Candidates are advised to visit the DGHS website for exact dates and registration procedures. Registration on the DGHS portal is mandatory; candidates who do not register will not be considered for screening or admission.

Candidates must preserve their NEET UG 2026 admit card (hall ticket) and score card throughout the entire admission process. These documents will be required during the interview, screening, and final admission to the college. Loss of the admit card may result in rejection of candidature.

Selection process: screening, merit list, and interview

After the registration window closes, DGHS will provide AFMC with the list of candidates who have applied. AFMC will then shortlist candidates based on NEET UG 2026 merit. Approximately 2,000 candidates (1,600 boys and 400 girls) will be called for screening at AFMC, Pune. The NEET Roll Numbers of shortlisted candidates will be displayed on www.afmcdg1d.gov.in and www.afmc.nic.in. The exact schedule of screening, along with details of shortlisted candidates, will be published on these websites. Requests for change of interview date will not be entertained except under exceptional circumstances.

The screening at AFMC comprises four components: (1) Test of English Language and Reasoning (ToELR)—a computer-based test of 40 multiple-choice questions (2 marks each, total 80 marks) to be answered in 30 minutes, with negative marking of 0.5 for each incorrect answer; (2) Psychological Assessment Test (PAT)—a qualifying test (score not counted in final merit); (3) Interview—50 marks, covering core medical subjects, general awareness, interests, hobbies, and personality; and (4) Medical Examination—assessment by a Medical Board as per Armed Forces standards.

The final written examination score is calculated as: (NEET UG 2026 score out of 720 + ToELR score out of 80) ÷ 4 = score out of 200. The final score is: Written examination score (200) + Interview marks (50) = total out of 250. Candidates are ranked separately for boys and girls. Two separate merit lists—one for boys and one for girls—are prepared. Candidates not selected in the merit list are placed on a waiting list and may be called in blocks if seats become available.

Weightage in the interview is given to candidates for: (a) participation in NCC/Sports at various levels; (b) wards of serving/ex-servicemen/JCOs/ORs/officers killed in action. Candidates declared medically unfit by the Medical Board will not appear in the final merit list, regardless of their written and interview scores.

Documents required at screening and admission

Candidates called for screening must bring originals of all certificates and documents. At the time of screening, candidates must produce: (1) Original NEET UG 2026 admit card (hall ticket) containing the NEET Roll number; (2) Original NEET UG 2026 score card; (3) Original mark sheets of the qualifying examination; (4) Original certificates of NCC, Sports participation at school, district, state, national, or international level (if any); (5) Result or proof of having appeared in the qualifying examination (if the result has not been declared at the time of screening).

Candidates must also produce original mark sheet and pass certificate of the qualifying examination prior to admission. If results and mark sheets are not received by the date of reporting for admission, the candidature will be cancelled and no representation will be entertained. No candidate will be admitted provisionally awaiting the result of the qualifying examination.

At the time of admission, candidates must produce the original NEET UG 2026 admit card and all original certificates and documents as specified in the joining instructions. If at any point during interview, admission, or the MBBS course the documents are found to be false, not authentic, or any discrepancy is observed, the candidature, selection, or admission will be cancelled forthwith and fees/deposits will be forfeited.

Important: Do not send any documents to AFMC by post. Original certificates and documents are required and checked only at the time of screening and admission.

Medical fitness standards: what will disqualify you?

Medical fitness for admission is assessed by a Medical Board at AFMC as per standards prescribed for grant of commission in the Army Medical Corps. Candidates must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disability likely to interfere with efficient performance of duty in the Armed Forces. The Medical Board will categorize candidates as Fit or Unfit. Candidates declared unfit have the right to appeal by paying a fee of ₹40, but the appeal must be made in person on the same day or the very next day. Any representation at a later date or by phone/email will not be entertained. The decision of the Appeal Medical Board is final; there is no provision for a third medical examination.

Key disqualifying conditions include: (1) Serious deformity or mal-development, scoliosis, spina bifida, or other skeletal deformities; (2) Impediment of speech; (3) Functional or organic disease of the heart and blood vessels; (4) Active Pulmonary TB or sequelae of TB or chronic lung disease (X-ray chest required); (5) Disease of the digestive system, liver, or spleen abnormality (ultrasound of abdomen required); (6) Inguinal hernia, hydrocele, definite varicocele, or disease of genital organs (candidates operated for hernia may be fit if more than 12 weeks have elapsed, abdominal tone is good, and there is no recurrence); (7) Fistula or piles; (8) Kidney disease, glycosuria, or albuminuria; (9) Skin disease; (10) Active, latent, or congenital STI or HIV infection; (11) History of epilepsy or mental/psychiatric disorder; (12) Squint or morbid condition of eyes/eyelids; (13) Active trachoma or complications; (14) Enlarged lymph nodes in neck or body.

Height and weight standards are strictly enforced. Male cadets must have a minimum height of 157 cm (152 cm for Hills and North Eastern States). Female cadets must have a minimum height of 152 cm (147 cm for Hills and North Eastern States). An allowance of 2 cm growth is given for candidates below 18 years at examination. Weight must fall within specified ranges for height and age (see weight-for-height charts in the brochure). Exceptions for higher weight are allowed only for candidates with documented evidence of bodybuilding, wrestling, or boxing, and only if Body Mass Index is below 27, waist-hip ratio is below 0.9 (males) or 0.8 (females), waist circumference is less than 94 cm (males) or 89 cm (females), and all biochemical parameters are normal.

Visual standards require uncorrected vision of 6/36 in each eye with best-corrected vision of 6/6 in each eye. Myopia up to -3.50 D sphere with astigmatism up to ±2.0 D cylinder is acceptable. Hypermetropia up to +3.50 D sphere with astigmatism up to ±2.0 D cylinder is acceptable. Colour vision must be CP II. LASIK is not permitted below 20 years of age. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or equivalent refractive surgery must be at least 20 years old at surgery, have at least 12 months post-LASIK, central corneal thickness of at least 450 µ, axial length of 26 mm or less, residual refraction of ±1.0 D or less, and normal healthy retina. A certificate from the surgery centre specifying date and type of surgery is required. Hearing must allow the candidate to hear a forced whisper at 610 cm distance with each ear separately. Minimum 14 dental points are required; candidates must be free from severe pyorrhoea and advanced caries. Female candidates undergo gynecological and ultrasound examination.

Service liability and bond: what you must know

Admission to AFMC is conditional on compulsory service liability. All candidates admitted must serve as Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). The type of commission offered—Short Service Commission (SSC) or Permanent Commission (PC)—depends on vacancies available and is determined on merit-cum-option at the final MBBS examination. Short Service Commission officers must serve for 7 years. Permanent Commission officers must serve until the date of superannuation (typically age 60).

At the time of admission, parents/guardians must sign a bond agreement for ₹71,00,000 (Rupees Seventy-One Lakhs only). This is a legal and financial commitment. Any candidate withdrawing from the college after 7 days of admission (after 1600 hours / 4 PM) must pay the full bond money as per existing rules. This is a significant financial liability and must be understood before admission.

If a medical cadet is declared Non-Service Liability (NSL) due to medical grounds—where the cadet contracted a disease or disability in circumstances beyond their control and did not refuse treatment—the cadet will not be liable to pay the bond money. However, the cadet must pay the cost of training, tuition fees, and other charges for the period of study from the date NSL is declared. The current cost of training is ₹28,166 per week and may be revised by the Government of India. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) for internship will be issued only after all dues are cleared. NSL cadets may be permitted to avail hostel facility at the discretion of DGAFMS.

If a medical cadet is removed or opts out from service liability after passing the final MBBS examination, the NOC for joining internship training will be issued only after the full bond money is paid. Medical cadets removed/opted out from service liability after passing final MBBS may join internship training in any approved AFMS internship hospital.

SC/ST candidates: reserved seats and eligibility

Up to 10 seats out of the 145 total seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST). These are in addition to any seats secured by SC/ST candidates on the basis of their position in the main merit list (excluding waiting list). SC/ST candidates must have applied for AFMC and qualified in NEET UG 2026.

SC/ST candidates must fulfill all other conditions and standards applicable to non-SC/ST candidates, including age eligibility, academic qualifications, medical fitness standards, and the cutoff criteria for shortlisting for interview. There is no relaxation in these standards for SC/ST candidates.

If an SC/ST girl or boy is admitted against the reserved vacancies, the number of girls or boys to be admitted against the general seats will be reduced correspondingly to maintain the overall gender ratio (115 boys and 30 girls total). All SC/ST candidates admitted must sign the same surety bond (₹71 lakhs) on the same conditions as non-SC/ST candidates.

Hostel, facilities, and special concessions for cadets

AFMC is a fully residential college. Stay in the hostel is compulsory for all medical cadets once they join. Separate hostels for boys and girls are located on the college campus. All cadets reside in hostels and are subject to hostel rules and discipline.

All cadets residing in the hostel are required to be members of the Mess attached to the hostel. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is served in the cadets' mess as per the choice of individual cadets. The government provides entitled rations and subsidized messing arrangements.

The government provides the following concessions and facilities to service liability cadets: (1) Entitled rations and subsidized messing; (2) Hostel accommodation and allied services; (3) AC-3 Tier railway warrants for journey during term vacation from college to home and back; (4) AC-2 Tier rail journey on railway warrants after being commissioned; (5) Book & Equipment Allowance of ₹6,000 per cadet per year; (6) Stationery Allowance of ₹1,680 per year and ₹210 per month; (7) Uniform allowance of ₹6,000 during first year and ₹1,250 per year as maintenance allowance in subsequent years; (8) Hair Cutting Allowance of ₹210 per month; (9) Washing allowance of ₹840 per month and ₹315 during break; (10) Insurance/Disability benefits by Army Group Insurance fund on payment of ₹7,200 as a one-time non-refundable premium (additional premium of ₹1,355 for every relegated term of 6 months). Insurance cover is ₹15,00,000 for death and ₹15,00,000 for 100% disability, proportionately reduced to ₹3,00,000 for 20% disability.

Medical cadets with service liability are entitled to free outpatient, inpatient, and dental treatment at all times in any service hospital or dental centre to the extent of medical facilities available locally. Periodic medical examinations and medical boards are conducted as necessary. All cadets must undergo an Annual Medical Examination. Vacations are given as per university curriculum: generally 2 weeks in May/June (summer) and 2 weeks in December/January (winter). Cadets are required to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Facilities for sports (cricket, athletics, tennis, squash, hockey, football, volleyball, table tennis, aquatics, gymnastics) and hobbies (music, dance, drama, debate, quizzing) are available. There is an auditorium for movie screening; membership is compulsory. Note: All concessions and facilities are subject to amendment without notice as per Government orders issued from time to time.

Discipline, ragging, and code of conduct

Every medical cadet is required to conduct themselves in a disciplined and befitting manner. Cadets must be properly dressed at all times and punctilious in paying compliments to staff members. The conduct of cadets during their stay at the college is governed by a Code of Conduct, a copy of which is provided to all cadets on admission.

Breach of discipline and failure to abide by the rules and regulations of the college, hostel, or mess will render a cadet liable to disciplinary action, including being struck off the college rolls, expulsion from the college, or being declared Non-Service Liability (NSL) with consequent financial implications. Cadets must be punctual and regular in attending classes and must appear at all tests and examinations. If a cadet's attendance or academic performance is not up to the required standard, they may be detained for the term. Disciplinary action will be taken against cadets for being absent from training classes.

Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited and is a criminal offence under the Gazette of India No. 582 (Extraordinary, Part-III-section 4, dated 20 November 2021) and National Medical Commission notification (dated 18 November 2021). Ragging includes abusing, harassing, ill-treating, manhandling, bullying, or awarding undignified or unauthorized punishment to a cadet by any other cadet. Strict disciplinary action, including expulsion from the college, will be taken against any cadet indulging in ragging in accordance with the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court and MUHS ruling on the subject.

It is mandatory for all students and their parents to submit an anti-ragging affidavit. The affidavit must be filled online by logging on to http://antiragging.in. A printout of the email acknowledgement received by the cadet and parents must be submitted to Brigadier Administration (UG) at the beginning of each term with signatures of the cadet and parents duly affixed. AFMC promotes a sense of confidence and high standards of professional knowledge, character development, and leadership qualities among cadets. There is no place for ragging in any form.

Career prospects: ranks, pay, and postgraduate opportunities

On successful completion of the MBBS course from AFMC, medical cadets join the Armed Forces Medical Services as Commissioned Officers in one of the three services: Army, Navy, or Air Force. The type of commission—Permanent Commission (PC) or Short Service Commission (SSC)—is offered on the basis of merit-cum-choice as per policy in vogue at the time of final MBBS examination.

The rank structure for AFMS officers is as follows: On commissioning, officers are commissioned as Lieutenants (Level 10 as per 7th CPC). On completion of internship, they are promoted to Captain (Level 10B). After 4 years of service as Captain, they are promoted to Major (Level 11). After 7 years of service as Major, they are promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (Level 12A). Promotion to Colonel (Level 13), Brigadier (Level 13A), Major General (Level 14), and Lieutenant General (Levels 15, 16) is by selection.

In addition to salary, officers receive Military Service Pay (MSP), Non-practicing allowance, and Dearness Allowance as applicable. In the Armed Forces Medical Services, all relevant specialties and sub-specialties are available. Officers are eligible for selection to Post-Graduation (PG) or DNB courses in selected service hospitals through NEET-PG conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) or any other exam conducted by the Government of India through statutory bodies (NExT) as per merit and terms of service. Permanent Commission officers, on completion of the stipulated mandatory period of service, are also entitled to proceed on 2–3 years study leave with full pay for advanced training in India or abroad as per selection and performance. The AFMS institutes have a training capacity of approximately 400 PG seats and 45 super-specialty seats each year.
