What exactly changed
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai sent an email on 6 August 2026 asking the CET Cell to update three provisions of the brochure: Rule 24.1, Rule 24.2, and Rule 28. The CET Cell has now issued these updated rules, and they officially become part of the NEET UG 2026 Information Brochure with immediate effect.

BDS students: the one-year social service bond still applies
If you take admission to a BDS seat in a Government or Municipal Corporation medical college — whether through the GOI Nominee quota, the All India Quota, or the State Quota — from NEET UG 2022 onward, this rule applies to you.
After you finish your BDS degree and complete your compulsory internship, you must serve one year with the Government of Maharashtra, a local self-government body (such as a municipal corporation), or the Defence services. This is a Government Resolution requirement (originally from 2008, reaffirmed in 2022), not something the college decides on its own.
There is a second, separate condition attached to this: you must also sign an undertaking that you will not leave India for five years counted from the date you receive your degree. If you break this undertaking, you must pay a non-refundable penalty of Rs 10,00,000 (Rs 10 lakh). This is not a fee you can negotiate down — it is fixed in the rule.

MBBS students: the one-year service requirement has been removed

Under a fresh Government Resolution dated 23 July 2026, students who complete MBBS from Government or Municipal Corporation medical colleges, AND students who complete MBBS from Private Unaided or Minority medical colleges in Maharashtra, no longer have to do the one-year social responsibility service.
In simple terms: the compulsory one-year service after internship that used to apply broadly is now limited to BDS students in government/municipal colleges. MBBS students across government, municipal, private unaided and minority colleges in the state are exempt.
