With NEET UG 2026 results out on July 16, more than 11.21 lakh candidates now know they have qualified — but the actual admission process hasn't begun yet. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which handles seat allotment for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) MBBS/BDS seats and all seats at AIIMS, JIPMER and other central institutions, is expected to open registration in the first week of August 2026. This year's counselling is arriving later than usual because the exam cycle itself was delayed after a re-test was conducted on June 21. Why counselling is starting later this year

What MCC counselling actually covers

MCC does not conduct counselling for every MBBS/BDS seat in the country. Its scope is limited to the 15% AIQ seats in government medical colleges, plus 100% of seats at AIIMS, JIPMER and other central institutions and participating deemed universities.

The remaining 85% of seats in state government and private colleges are allotted through separate state counselling authorities, which typically release their own schedules only after MCC announces the AIQ dates. As of now, no state has published its state-quota schedule; West Bengal has only begun preparing its merit list.

Now, a candidate who has already been allotted a seat in one round can simply request an upgrade online in a later round — for example, moving from a private college to a government one, or to a higher-ranked institute — without visiting the college in person. The upgrade only goes through if a vacancy actually opens up in the preferred college or course, and it depends entirely on the candidate's rank and category.

This year's broader reforms also include no mandatory physical reporting at counselling centres, fully online document upload (including for NRI-category candidates), and MCC-led training for participating college staff to handle the new digital process smoothly.
