AFMC Pune MBBS Admission 2026: NEET UG Eligibility, Seats, Screening and Bond Details

AFMC Pune, one of India's premier defence medical colleges, has published its Information Brochure for MBBS Admission 2026. This is not itself an application form — it is the official rulebook explaining who can apply, how many seats exist, how NEET UG 2026 scores feed into AFMC's own selection process, and what candidates must produce and sign if selected. AFMC will fill 145 medical cadet seats (115 boys, 30 girls) with a service liability to the Armed Forces, plus up to 5 additional seats for government-sponsored candidates from friendly foreign countries. Candidates must first qualify NEET UG 2026 and register for AFMC through the MCC website (www.mcc.nic.in) during a window that will be announced separately by DGHS. This brochure lays out everything that happens after that — screening, interview, medical board, and the financial bond — in detail.

What This Brochure Covers — And What It Doesn't

This document is AFMC Pune's official brochure describing the admission process for MBBS 2026. It does not itself open applications. To be considered, a candidate must first appear for and qualify NEET UG 2026 (conducted by NTA), and then register specifically for AFMC on the DGHS counselling website www.mcc.nic.in during a registration window that DGHS will announce later. The brochure tells you what happens after that registration — how AFMC shortlists candidates, what tests and interviews follow, and what you must sign if you are offered a seat.

• AFMC, Pune is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
• The MBBS course runs for 4½ academic years, followed by a compulsory 12-month rotating internship at NMC-recognised service hospitals.
• Admission is governed by rules set by the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), Ministry of Defence.

Seats on Offer in 2026

A total of 150 candidates will be taken in for MBBS 2026 at AFMC, but not all of them carry the same terms. It is important to understand the split before you plan around this number.

• 145 seats (115 boys, 30 girls) go to candidates selected as Medical Cadets — these carry a compulsory liability to serve as Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) after graduation.
• 5 additional seats are reserved for NEET(UG)-qualified foreign students from friendly foreign countries, sponsored by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence. These do not carry the citizenship or service-liability conditions.
• Up to 10 seats out of the 145 are earmarked for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) candidates, subject to conditions explained later in this article.
• Selected candidates are commissioned as officers of the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy or Air Force) in addition to becoming doctors, so physical fitness, psychological robustness and leadership qualities are formally assessed, not just academic marks.

Who Is Eligible — Nationality, Age and Marital Status

Beyond qualifying NEET UG 2026, AFMC applies its own eligibility filters covering citizenship, marital status, age and medical fitness. Missing any one of these disqualifies a candidate regardless of NEET rank.

• Must be a citizen of India. Foreign nationals of Indian origin can be admitted only after acquiring Indian citizenship or after the Ministry of Home Affairs issues a certificate of eligibility (this condition does not apply to the 5 foreign-sponsored seats).
• Must be unmarried at the time of admission. Marriage during the course is not permitted.
• Must be medically fit as per Ministry of Defence standards (detailed in Appendix 'A' of the brochure — see the medical fitness section below).
• Age: must have attained 17 years, or be completing 17 years, on or before 31 December of the admission year, but must not have attained 24 years by that date. For 2026, this means the candidate must be born not earlier than 1 January 2003 and not later than 31 December 2009.

Academic Eligibility — Read This Carefully

AFMC's academic eligibility rules are stricter than plain NEET eligibility on one crucial point: the qualifying exam must have been cleared in the first attempt.

Candidates must have passed English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology simultaneously in a recognised qualifying examination (Class 12 or an equivalent listed by AFMC), securing not less than 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology taken together, and not less than 50% in English and not less than 50% in each of the three science subjects. A pass in Mathematics at the Class 10 level is also required.

A candidate whose Class 12 result is still awaited may apply and appear for the AFMC interview, but will not be eligible for final admission unless the qualifying percentage above is met once the result is declared.

• Candidates who studied the required subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, English) as additional subjects after Class 12, or via Intermediate/Pre-degree, Pre-professional/Pre-medical, first year of a 3-year degree, or B.Sc. routes, are also eligible provided they meet the marks criteria and produce documentary proof — several such equivalent routes are listed in the brochure (paras 7.2 to 7.7).
• NOT eligible: candidates who passed Domestic Science, Domestic Arithmetic or Lower Math (alone or combined with General Science/Social Studies) instead of the required science subjects.
• NOT eligible: candidates who passed only a one-year Pre-University/Pre-Degree or a Pre-Professional course in Agriculture, Veterinary or Dental subjects.
• NOT eligible: candidates who secured the requisite percentage only in a subsequent attempt or in a compartment examination — the qualifying percentage must be achieved in the first attempt.

From NEET Score to Final Merit — How Selection Actually Works

After the AFMC registration window on the MCC website closes, DGHS provides AFMC the list of applicants. AFMC then shortlists roughly 2000 candidates (about 1600 boys and 400 girls) purely on NEET UG 2026 merit for its own on-campus screening. Only these shortlisted candidates get called; requests to change the interview date are not entertained except in exceptional circumstances.

The on-campus screening at AFMC, Pune has four parts, and only after all four does AFMC prepare its final merit lists — one for boys and one for girls.

• Test of English Language and Reasoning (ToELR): a Computer Based Test of 40 MCQs, 2 marks each (max 80 marks), with 0.5 negative marking per wrong answer, to be completed in 30 minutes.
• Psychological Assessment Test (PAT): also a Computer Based Test, but it is only qualifying in nature — the PAT score itself is not added to the merit list.
• Interview (50 marks): covers the candidate's core subjects plus general awareness, interests, hobbies and personality. Extra weightage is given for participation in NCC/Sports at various levels, and for wards of serving/ex-servicemen officers, JCOs/OR, or those killed in action.
• Medical Examination: conducted by a Medical Board at AFMC as per Armed Forces standards. Candidates declared unfit here are dropped from the final merit list regardless of academic or interview performance.

Documents You Must Carry — Do Not Post Anything to AFMC

AFMC is explicit that no testimonials, mark-sheet copies or results should be sent by post — everything is checked in person, first at screening and again at final admission.

At the time of screening, candidates must carry originals of every certificate/mark-sheet, the NEET UG 2026 admit card (hall ticket), the NEET UG 2026 score card, and original NCC or Sports certificates (school, District, State, National/International level), if applicable. If the qualifying exam result has not yet been declared, proof of having appeared for it must be shown instead. The original mark sheet and pass certificate of the qualifying exam, however, must be produced before actual admission — provisional admission on the basis of an awaited result is not allowed.

• NEET UG 2026 admit card (hall ticket) — original, and must be preserved right through the admission process.
• NEET UG 2026 score card — original.
• All original certificates and mark-sheets of the qualifying (Class 12 or equivalent) examination.
• Original NCC certificate, if any.
• Original Sports certificates at school, District, State, National or International level, if any.
• Proof of having appeared for the qualifying exam, if its result is not yet declared (screening only — final result and pass certificate needed before admission).
• At final admission: original admit card plus other documents specified in the joining instructions issued along with the merit/waiting list.

The Trap: False Documents, Missed Reporting Time, and the Financial Bond

AFMC's rules leave very little room for error once a candidate is called. Several conditions can cost a selected candidate their seat even after being placed on the merit or waiting list.

Financial commitment is significant: parents/guardians must sign a bond agreement for Rs 71,00,000 (Rupees Seventy-One Lakhs) at the time of admission. A candidate who withdraws after 7 days of admission (specifically, after 4 PM on the 7th day) must pay the Bond Money as per existing rules.

• Reporting cut-off is strict: waitlisted candidates called in blocks must report by 1400 hrs (2 PM) on the day specified; anyone arriving after the cut-off will not be entertained under any circumstances.
• No seat is held vacant for a higher-merit waitlisted candidate who fails to report on the assigned date/time — there is no second chance.
• If a candidate's documents are found false or inauthentic at any stage — during interview, admission, or even during the MBBS course itself — the candidature, selection or admission is cancelled immediately.
• If a candidate is found to have secured less than the required marks in the qualifying exam, or concealed a disease to obtain admission, the admission is cancelled and fees/deposits are forfeited.
• Service liability: Short Service Commission (SSC) officers must serve 7 years in AFMS; Permanent Commission (PC) officers serve till superannuation. The type of commission depends on vacancies and is decided by merit-cum-option at the final MBBS exam.
• A medical cadet declared Non-Service Liability (NSL) on medical grounds beyond their control does not pay the bond, but must pay the cost of training (currently Rs 28,166 per week), tuition and other charges for the remaining study period before an NOC for internship is issued.

Medical Fitness — Where Many Candidates Get Caught Out

AFMC's medical standards (Appendix 'A' of the brochure) are far more detailed than typical MBBS admission requirements because selected candidates are also commissioned as Armed Forces officers. A Medical Board at AFMC categorises each candidate as Fit or Unfit; there is no 'Temporary Unfit' category, and a candidate found unfit is simply not considered further — even if willing to undergo treatment.

If declared unfit by the Initial Medical Board, a candidate can appeal to an Appeal Medical Board, but only by applying in person to the Commandant, AFMC within 24 hours of the Initial Board decision (excluding holidays/Sundays), on payment of a Rs 40 appeal fee. There is no provision for any further medical board after the Appeal Board's decision, and no medical board can be conducted at a civil or private hospital.

• Height: minimum 157 cm for male cadets (152 cm for candidates from Hills/North-Eastern states) and 152 cm for female cadets (147 cm for Hills/North-Eastern states), with a 2 cm growth allowance for candidates below 18 years.
• Weight: detailed weight-for-height charts apply; falling below the minimum weight for one's height is unacceptable in any case, and exceeding the maximum is acceptable only with documented evidence of bodybuilding/wrestling/boxing plus BMI below 27, waist-hip ratio below 0.9 (males)/0.8 (females), and waist circumference under 94 cm (males)/89 cm (females).
• Vision: uncorrected visual acuity of 6/36 in each eye with best-corrected vision of 6/6 each; myopia limited to ≤ -3.50 D Sph (with astigmatism ≤ ±2.0 D Cyl) and hypermetropia ≤ +3.50 D Sph. Colour vision standard CP II is required.
• LASIK/refractive surgery: LASIK is not permitted below 20 years of age. Older procedures like Radial Keratotomy make a candidate permanently unfit unless very specific post-surgery criteria (age at surgery, time elapsed, corneal thickness, axial length, residual refraction, healthy retina, and a surgery certificate) are all met.
• No active/latent/congenital STI or HIV infection, no history of epilepsy or psychiatric disorder, no squint or other eye/eyelid conditions, no active trachoma, and no serious skeletal deformity such as scoliosis or spina bifida.
• Dental: minimum of 14 dental points required, free from severe pyorrhoea and advanced caries. Hearing: must be able to hear a forced whisper at 610 cm with each ear separately.
• A Gynaecological and Ultrasound examination is compulsory for all female candidates; an abdominal ultrasound and chest X-ray are done for all candidates to rule out TB and abdominal disease.

Life at AFMC and Career After MBBS

AFMC is a fully residential college — hostel stay is compulsory for all medical cadets, in separate boys' and girls' hostels, with compulsory mess membership offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

On successful completion of the MBBS course, medical cadets are commissioned as officers in the Army, Navy or Air Force (Permanent or Short Service Commission, decided by merit-cum-choice). Promotion follows a defined rank ladder, and cadets are eligible for postgraduate and super-specialty training within AFMS through NEET-PG or NExT, subject to service terms — AFMS institutes together train about 400 PG seats and 45 super-specialty seats each year.

• Vacations: 2 weeks in May/June (summer) and 2 weeks in December/January (winter), as per university curriculum.
• Free rations, subsidised messing and hostel accommodation; AC-3 Tier rail warrants for vacation travel while a cadet, AC-2 Tier after commissioning.
• Book & Equipment Allowance of Rs 6,000/year; Stationery Allowance of Rs 1,680/year plus Rs 210/month; Uniform Allowance of Rs 6,000 in the first year and Rs 1,250/year thereafter; Hair-cutting Allowance Rs 210/month; Washing Allowance Rs 840/month (Rs 315 during breaks).
• Compulsory Army Group Insurance on a one-time non-refundable premium of Rs 7,200 (Rs 1,355 extra per relegated six-month term), covering Rs 15,00,000 for death or 100% disability, proportionately reduced for lower disability percentages.
• Rank progression after commissioning: Lieutenant on commissioning, Captain on completing internship, Major after 4 years as Captain, Lieutenant Colonel after 7 years as Major, and Colonel/Brigadier/Major General/Lieutenant General by selection.
• Officers also receive Military Service Pay, Non-Practising Allowance, Dearness Allowance, subsidised accommodation, 60 days annual leave plus 20 days casual leave, Leave Travel Concession, free medical care for self, family and dependent parents, Group Insurance of Rs 75 lakh, and Canteen Stores Depot facilities.
• Ragging is strictly prohibited; students and parents must submit an anti-ragging affidavit online at antiragging.in and submit a printed acknowledgement at the start of each term.
